Seminars at TotalDairy Seminar 15

Final preparations are being made for the 2017 TotalDairy Seminar, due to take place on 14-15 June at Keele University, Staffordshire.

Previously known as the Large Herd Seminar, the event is now in its 12th year and is organised by the Evidence Group and Model Nutrition Dairy Consulting. The new location brings the event right into the heart of a prime dairy region.

“Keele University is easily accessible by road and rail and includes fantastic, purpose built conference facilities with ample, on site accommodation and great facilities for the usual networking opportunities,” says Julia Moorhouse, from the Evidence Group.

Expert speakers

This year’s seminar will again play host to a variety of expert speakers from around the world. Presenters will cover three main areas under the overarching theme of efficient dairy farming: youngstock, fertility and nutrition.

Delegates will get to choose which lectures or smaller group seminars they attend. Farmers looking for advice on maximising milk constituents or monitoring herd fertility will be able to get their questions answered in a number of dedicated farmer workshops.

Speakers include professor Adam Lock, from Michigan State University – whose work specialises in feeding fats; and fertility experts Miel Hostens, from the University of Ghent; and Paul Fricke, from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Herd management

With so many herd management software packages on the market and a huge range of data at farmers’ finger tips, it can often be hard to decide which Key Performance Indicators to look at. Dr Hostens aims to help farmers see the wood for the trees.

Independent consultant Ric Grummer from the US will be covering various nutritional topics, including transition cow management. John Remnant from Nottingham University will speak on the issue of dairy fertility.

Ginny Sherwin from Nottingham University will talk about youngstock management. She will be joined by farmer Ben Brown in a workshop on optimising pre-weaning health and performance. The pair will run through practical ways to improve existing calf buildings.

Michael Ballou from Texas Tech University will also be speaking about calf nutrition. He’ll be joined by Jud Heinrichs – a professor of dairy science at Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences and an expert in heifer nutrition and management.
