Bloodhound offers lowest early bolting scores for maximum yield

With the lowest early bolting score on the 2018 BBRO list, Bloodhound is the latest recommended sugar beet variety from SESVanderHave offering growers an opportunity to sow early and maximise yield potential.

The 2018 recommended list assesses early sowing by counting bolters/ha in plots sown before 5 March. The average of all control varieties was 6,745/ha – but Bloodhound scored 2,882/ha, the lowest on the list.

“Early drilling is the key to making the most of the yield potential of sugar beet,” explains SESVanderHave UK director Ian Munnery. “However, early sowing also carries the risk of early bolting which will reduce yields and increase costs.”

Specially bred

Bloodhound, like all SESVanderHave varieties, has been bred and selected specifically to suit UK conditions, adds Mr Munnery. Tested and trialed on real farms, the aim is to produce a variety that performs well while being reliable and consistent.

“Each year, we conduct some 20,000 trials across the key sugar beet growing areas of Britain. Our UK focused programme has delivered varieties with real staying power such as Cayman and Springbok which have been fully recommended for several years.

“Bloodhound is the next step. Its bolting levels are the lowest you can get. Even in a harsh year, you are getting only 3-4,000 bolters – the lowest among any variety on the list. When you look at that, even when drilling in February it is tenfold less than some varieties.

Impact on yield

“You don’t need a genius to work out that if you have to rip out 36,000 plants/ha because you’ve grown a variety that has bolted, it is going to have an impact on yield – far more than the couple of percent that is showing on the recommended list.”

Bloodhound is a consistent yielding variety that performs in the early, medium or late sowing slots, adds Mr Munnery. “It is from a proven genetic source, it minimises any risk faced growers and it will be available at a competitive price when it comes out.

“Most critically, it will give you the flexibility to get in early. It will be sown in 2018 in volume. If, by then, neonicotinoid treatments are banned, drilling early will be a big advantage – as well as satisfying any push for earlier drilling by the factories.”
