Sheep producers are celebrating Love Lamb Week 2017 – the national celebration which sees a dedicated week of promotional activity backed by farmers, butchers and retailers.

Now in its third year, this year’s week runs from 1-7 September. Supported by the National Sheep Association, the celebration is being led by the NSA Next Generation Ambassadors, a group of young sheep farmers passionate about producing quality British lamb.

Sheep farmer Toby Lawton from Newport, Shropshire says: “Love Lamb Week is a great advertisement for British Lamb. I’d encourage everyone to give lamb a try, especially if it’s not a product which would usually go in your shopping basket. It’s a great, versatile meat.”

Mr Lawton, an NSA Next Generation Ambassador who has built up sheep numbers at the family farm to 650-head, hopes to build up to a flock size of 900 in the near future. He is heavily involved in NSA activity and a strong spokesperson for the industry.

Campaign

As well as encouraging farmers like Mr Lawton to get involved in the campaign, NSA is working closely with AHDB Beef & Lamb and other industry bodies around Love Lamb Week to get consumers on board with how easy and versatile lamb is to cook with.

Sheep association chief executive Phil Stocker says: “NSA is pleased to be backing Love Lamb Week 2017, and thrilled to be able to put forward the NSA Next Generation Ambassadors to lead the way in promoting activity from 1-7 September.”

Mr Stock adds: “The beauty of the campaign is that everyone can get involved, as much or as little as they’re able to. If the week inspires consumers to try a lamb dish they wouldn’t have otherwise, it has severed its purpose.”

Nick White, head of beef and lamb marketing at AHDB, says: “Shoppers are looking for easy ways to cook healthy food. To increase their love for lamb we’ve created simple recipes with lamb leg steaks, which can be cooked in no time at all,”

In addition, a partnership with Mumsnet this year aims to take the worry out of cooking lamb, helping mums and dads to learn how to cook this versatile meat.
