A view of differing farm business models against an ever-changing political landscape will be offered at the Nottingham Farming Conference next month.

Held on 11 January, the conference is being jointly organised by the East Midlands Farm Management Association and the University of Nottingham. The day-long event takes place from 10.30am until 4pm.

Held at the university’s centre for research and teaching in agriculture, food and veterinary sciences at the Sutton Bonington campus, it aims to help farm businesses advance their strategic thinking as the UK prepares to leave the EU.

Speakers include John Shropshire, chairman of G’s Fresh, one of the largest growers of finest quality salads and vegetables. Also on the platform will be Ronan Hughes, managing director of agronomy service provider Agrii.

Tom Rawson, of Evolution Farming, who manages 2400 cows across six sites alongside a consultancy arm, will also address delegates. All will offer insights into how farmers can innovate, add product value, and seize new market opportunities.

Nuffield scholars Patrick Hook and Oliver White will discuss their findings on two potentially contrasting futures for agriculture: should the UK focus on innovation and intensification or extensification and environmental management for higher value food products?

East Midlands Farm Management Association chairman Ken Grimsdell said: “With changes in policy and legislation looming, taking a look at these visions will give delegates an excellent insight into different business models and futures.”

Conference organiser Paul Wilson said: “With a wealth of expertise on the platform, the conference is already generating much interest from attendees across the UK who want to look forward with their businesses.”

Over 100 delegates attended last year’s conference. Tickets are priced at £45 (£40 for East Midlands Farm Management Association members), which includes a two-course lunch with wine and the opportunity to network.
