The finishing touches are being put in place ahead of next month’s Beef Expo event – due to take place on Friday, 25 May, at Shrewbury livestock auction market.

Organised by the National Beef Association and hosted by auctioneers Halls, the British beef industry spectacular will once again be displaying the very best of British pedigree and commercial cattle under one roof – supported by more than 20 breed society displays.

The National Commercial Cattle Show (NCCS) will kick
off the showing season with the ultimate podium for breeders from across the UK to showcase their stock and compete for their share of over £6,000 of prize money.

Trade exhibitors

The theme for this year’s event is ‘Beef Up Our Future’. The show will encompass the entirety of the beef sector and its ancillary industries with more than 120 indoor and outdoor trade stands and demonstrations, covering nutrition, genetics, machinery and technologies.

NBA chief executive Chris Mallon said: “We are delighted to be taking our two-day Beef Expo event to the Welsh borders this Spring, an area producing great quantities of quality store cattle from some of the best suckler herds in the country.

“It is fantastic to be returning to a mart, particularly one of such quality. Livestock marts act as an integral part of the UK livestock trade, in 2016 Auction marts sold 15% of finished cattle, and we at the NBA are proud to support them at every opportunity.”

An array of technical seminars and debates will discuss and demonstrate how producers and the wider industry can work together to make farms and supply chains more economically viable, integrated and transparent as the UK prepares to leave the EU.

Farmer challenge

The Future Beef Farmer Challenge, established in 2015, will once again encourage enthusiastic young farmers aged 35 and under to rise to the challenge and be tested on their technical, practical and scientific knowledge with the chance to win a fantastic selection of prizes.

The show will be preceded by a day of Beef Expo farm tours on Thursday, 24 May – giving guests the opportunity to view three nearby beef farms. The tours will be followed by the Beef Expo Industry Dinner for all those within the industry.

Host Nick Hyne, of Halls auctioneers, said: “We are very pleased to be hosting this prestigious event and feel that Shrewsbury auction centre is ideally placed in the centre of the country, being very accessible by road and other transport links.”

Mr Hyne said he expected a large number of visitors at the show. He added: “The facilities on site and in the surrounding area are great for an event like this.  We look forward to working closely with the NBA to ensure the event is an enormous success.”
