Improved offer as AHDB sets out its stall

Growers attending Cereals 2018 will find help on hand to overcome the technical and economic challenges facing by their businesses.

The AHDB stand will be at the heart of the show’s newly-created Agronomy zone. It will feature a new Fungicide Futures initiative, the Great Soils programme of work and the ongoing review of the Recommended Lists.

The popular AHDB Monitor Farm debate will return on both days – discussing and bringing to life some of the key issues facing agriculture and how on-farm activities are supporting decision making by growers and advisers.

AHDB Cereals & Oilseeds strategy director Martin Grantley-Smith says the levy board’s focus at the show will remain on technical challenges facing agriculture, like the potential loss of fungicides and increased resistance.

But technical challenges are only one part of being ready and fit for the future in a post-Brexit world, he adds. “Our experts will also be on hand to provide robust economic and business information to help farmers and growers get in the best possible position for the months and years ahead.”

For the first time, the AHDB stand will not feature any Recommended Lists plots as growers will instead have the opportunity to attend an enhanced programme of variety plot open days, dubbed Arable Connections.

The events this summer will see AHDB join forces with other organisations to open up a number of arable trials sites to visitors – allowing growers to explore variety choices and market options in their own region.

It follows a commitment made by the AHDB in 2017 to improve communication with growers. The 2020 Inspiring Success strategy seeks to provide more relevant regional information to levy payers to support marketing decisions.

AHDB advisers and experts believe this will allow the levy board to demonstrate variety, quality and yield information at a local level to support farmers and growers in making well-informed decisions relevant to their own specific situations.
