A team of cyclists from Midlands law firm Lodders will take on the final leg of a six-week marathon relay bike ride around the UK, which is aiming to raise £100,000 for the Farming Community Network (FCN) charity.

Organised by the Grain and Feed Trade Association and UK Grain and Feed Trade Associations, the relay race started on the 20 June outside the Houses of Parliament and will finish on 31 July at NFU headquarters, Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire.

Billed as the biggest event of its type ever attempted by the farm supply trade, the bike ride has seen dozens of participants take in 170 locations along a 3,700-mile journey across England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

Lodders’ team of cyclists James Spreckley, Alastair Frew and David Lodder – who is also an FCN trustee and treasurer – will set off on the final 15-mile leg of the challenge to Stoneleigh from Lodders’ office at Stratford upon Avon.

Mr Spreckley said: “The aim of the relay is to help raise awareness of the issues facing farmers, while at the same time raising funds to provide on-going support for all members of the farming community and their families that is delivered by the Farming Community Network.

“The day to day working life of a farmer is unique, with frequent spells of lone working, enormous financial challenges and issues, and for many, last winter’s terrible weather was the final straw, and it put the farming community under unprecedented pressure.”

All monies raised will be donated to the FCN charity, which supports the farming community through times of stress, anxiety and depression. More than 6,000 people each year benefit from FCN’s support, delivered by a team of 400 volunteers.

Richard Cooksley, one of the event’s organisers, said: “If the event achieves the £100,000 target, it will make a huge contribution to FCN’s operations and send a powerful message about the unique bond between farmers and the agricultural supply trade network.”
