DSV is triple winner in ADAS Yield Enhancement Network

Attention to detail throughout the growing season saw Lincolnshire farmer Tim Lamyman scoop two gold awards for wheat and oilseed rape production in the 2018 ADAS Yield Enhancement Network (YEN) competition.

In a challenging season, Mr Lamyman achieved a yield of 16.2t/ha for his crop of  DSV Marston winter wheat at Worlaby Farm, Louth. His DSV Sparrow oilseed rape yielded 6.4t/ha – following his 7.01t/ha world record with the same variety earlier in the year.

It means DSV varieties came top in both the overall wheat and oilseed rape production categories in the YEN initiative. DSV also achieved a win for the highest yield in the YEN oilseed rape trials section too.

Crop management

Mr Lamyman explains: “We went with DSV because of the reputation of their oilseed rape varieties for high vigour, rapid root development and ability to grow through pest and disease problems. This was certainly in evidence last year.”

The crop of DSV Sparrow was drilled on 19 August. All in all, it received 260kg/ha of Nitrogen delivering a final yield of 6.4t/ha – a little behind his 7t/ha world record – with the ADAS judges saying this represented 52% of the crop’s full potential of 12.3t/ha.

“Despite being damaged over the winter by pigeons, it bounced back so we knew it had the yield potential to be a winner,” says Mr Lamyman.

The crop of DSV Marston winning wheat crop achieved a yield of 16.2t/ha – some 0.8t/ha more than the nearest rival and an estimated 84% of a potential yield of 18.3t/ha.

“DSV came through with a variety that was exactly what we were looking for with big heads, a sloping flag leaf to intercept as much light as possible – often a real limit on production in the UK – and a good overall disease resistance package.

“The crop received 360kg/ha of spring nitrogen, a full programme of foliar feeds and ended up just half a tonne or so short of the ultimate wheat world record of 16.79t/ha set in New Zealand – which says a lot about the variety.”

Variety pipeline

Michael Farr of DSV, who managed the company’s winning yield of 5.2t.ha of oilseed rape in the trials section of the competition, says the Sparrow and Marston varieties used in the winning YEN entries are just part of a pipeline of high performance varieties coming through.

“We’re expecting equal yield potential from our Theodore winter wheat which is now moving through the UK testing system and our new generation ‘Triple Layer’ oilseed rape varieties such as Darling and Dazzler offer huge potential.

“Not only do these have the high production capabilities of other DSV oilseed rape varieties, they add Rlm7+ Phoma Stem Canker and Light Leaf Spot resistance with Turnip Yellow Virus resistance and pod shatter resistance.

“The first of these new oilseed rape varieties Temptation, which features double layers of Phoma Stem Canker and Light Leaf Spot resistance with Turnip Yellow Virus resistance, has just been listed on the 2019 AHDB Recommended List.”

All-round performer

Temptation has one of the strongest all-round production and agronomic packages in the new 2019/20 AHDB RL, he says.

“Listed as suitable for the whole of the UK, the variety’s combination of high yields in challenging conditions and strong all-round disease package will make it one of the most reliable ‘drill and forget’ oilseed rape choices in the future.

“Temptation is one of the highest performing varieties currently available in the UK. In the challenging year of 2018, Temptation was a top three contender for yield in AHDB harvest trials with an average yield of 5.45t/ha – just marginally behind the 5.52t/ha of the leading variety.

“It also has an exceptional oil content with 46.5% in 2018 AHDB harvest trials and 46.0% in the 2019/20 RL – the joint highest oil content in the list.”

Oilseed rape is increasingly about mitigating risks and becoming less reliant on the sprayer and more dependent on solid genetics with in-built agronomic defences, says Mr Farr.
