The Midlands annual event for arable farmers is to return for its sixth year on 19 June with a focus on precision farming.

Held on the Shropshire and Staffordshire border, the Arable Event recorded its best ever attendance last year, with more than 1,200 delegates from across the industry, and looks set to improve on those numbers in 2019.

Organised by Wynnstay and GrainLink, the day is built around a series of Syngenta crop trials – including winter wheat, winter barley, oilseed rape, soya and winter triticale. Guided tours take place throughout the day to share updates on how the varieties are performing.

Another key feature since the Arable Event’s inception has been machinery demonstrations. This year will see a wide range of the latest precision drilling equipment shown off by some of the region’s leading dealers.

Rea Valley Tractors will demonstrate the John Deere 750A with its new Pro Series opener. Another highlight is expected to be the latest Horsch Avatar no-till drill, provided by main dealer, Edwards & Farmer of Shrewsbury, plus more yet to be announced.

A range of speakers will provide updates on key topics, including this year the man credited by the Oxford English Dictionary with coining the word ‘Brexit’ – lawyer, author and lobbyist Peter Wilding, of FBC Manby Bowdler Solicitors.

Mr Wilding will give an up-to-the-minute overview of where we stand in the Brexit process and the preparations and planning farming businesses need to be carrying out. Also presenting will be agri-business consultant, Graham Redman, of the Andersons Centre.

Another first will be one-on-one ‘ask the expert’ sessions with key specialists across a range of topics. The Arable Event is free to attend and guests receive complementary food and drink throughout the day from a small farmers’ market with local produce.

Attendees can also collect BASIS and NRoSO points – plus, for the first time, being able to collect extra points by following a BASIS ‘knowledge trail’.
