Grain drying specialists Alvan Blanch have received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise 2019 for outstanding achievements relating to international trade.

It is the third time that the company has received the award – having won previously in 2005 and 2012. Alvan Blanch says it is the only company within the agricultural sector to have received an award within the international trade category.

Alvan Blanch is a manufacturer of post-harvest processing machinery and industrial drying systems. With regular markets in every inhabited continent, the company has focused on using its international trade to drive growth, while maintaining its established UK customer base.

Managing director Andrew Blanch said: “It represents a great achievement by everyone here.  When we first won it 14 years ago we had managed £3m of export sales, the award in 2012 reflected sharp growth of exports to £8m, while now we have reached £12m.”

Understanding the challenges and changes of fast-moving markets has been crucial for international success, says Mr Blanch. The company employs a number of dedicated engineering and design teams constantly working on product enhancement and R&D.

The last five years have seen a large expansion in global operations for the Wiltshire-based manufacturer. It has opened sales offices and service centres in several markets in Asia, Australia, Africa and Europe, benefiting customer and dealer relationships, says Mr Blanch.

“Over that period, we have doubled our workforce to 120 and we have recently invested very heavily in manufacturing automation and in expanding our factory. We now have a world-class manufacturing facility that enables us to compete in highly demanding global markets.”

Drying systems are specifically designed to suit an extensive range of crops and products – including soya beans, rice and and paper as well as UK-grown wheat, barley, oats, oilseed rape, linseed and grass seed

Equipment is matched to the specific needs of clients while taking careful account of local factors such as climate, crop types, traditions and economic pressures. All this enables driers to be used to their full capacity, says Mr Blanch.
