Animal health is among the topics to be addressed by a three-year project to strengthen and improve farm business resilience.

Launched this year, the Beef It Up scheme aims to help farms improve their management practices and sustainability performance by introducing them to practical steps they can take to immediately make changes to their production systems.

Workshops

The scheme will involve a series of group workshops aimed at livestock farmers who are part of the Prince’s Countryside Fund Farm Resilience Programme network. It is being launched by the fund with support from McDonald’s.

The resilience programme is the fund’s flagship scheme. Since 2016, it has  provided free training and professional advice to help more than 900 farming families improve their business skills in 60 locations across the British Isles.

Prince’s Countryside Fund director Claire Saunders said: “I am thrilled that the fund will be working again with McDonald’s, in order to help us improve the prospects of family farm businesses across the UK at such a critical time.”

Future-proof

Workshops will address topics around animal health and welfare, farm safety, economic resilience and environmental management. The Beef It Up goal is to help future-proof the livestock sector by promoting innovation and fresh solutions to challenges faced by farmers.

The programme has a good track record of success, encouraging significant changes in farm management and behaviour. Some 91% of participating families improve their communication, and 89% have a better understanding of costs.

Partnership

McDonald’s works with more than 23,000 British and Irish farmers. Nina Prichard, head of sustainable and ethical sourcing at McDonald’s UK said the partnership was an important way of supporting the fast-food giant’s suppliers.

“Farming is part of the fabric of our society, and we are delighted to be working with the Prince’s Countryside Fund,” she added.
